The State of AI Report 2024 came out last week and we could not stop ourselves from reading it. The report offers a compelling snapshot of rapidly evolving landscape of GenAI. This year's findings reveal intriguing patterns in AI adoption and investment. From robotics to enterprise software, we're seeing AI reshape diverse sectors in profound ways.

The AI industry is experiencing a fascinating paradox of high valuations and uncertain profitability, as illustrated by this intriguing chart from the State of AI 2024 report. We're witnessing a gold rush in the generative AI sector, with startups attracting astronomical valuations relative to their current revenues. The graph showcases revenue multiples for prominent AI companies, with some reaching as high as 568 times their revenue.


This trend reflects the immense investor optimism surrounding AI's potential, but it also raises critical questions about the sustainability of these valuations. Many of these highly valued startups lack a clear path to profitability, creating a high-stakes environment where expectations for future returns are extraordinarily elevated. This marks a significant shift from the previous year's observations, where generative AI products struggled to retain paying customers beyond their initial novelty phase and trial periods.


The data reveals a marked improvement in both customer spend and retention rates from the 2022 to 2023 cohorts. The retention graph illustrates this trend clearly, with the 2023 cohort maintaining a 63% retention rate after 12 months, compared to only 41% for the 2022 cohort. This 22 percentage point increase suggests that AI products are becoming more integral to business operations and delivering sustained value to enterprise customers.


Furthermore, the quarterly billing data for AI products shows a robust upward trajectory. Starting from $20,000 in Q2 2023, billings have grown consistently, reaching $32,000 by Q4 2023. The projections for 2024 are even more impressive, with Q1 and Q2 expected to hit $90,000 and $98,000 respectively. This steep growth curve indicates not only higher retention but also increased spending per customer, likely due to expanded use cases and deeper integration into business processes.


Several companies are leading this positive trend, including OpenAI, Grammarly, Anthropic, Midjourney, Otter, and ElevenLabs.

The rapid ascent of AI-first companies in the technology sector is reshaping the landscape of business growth and scalability. An analysis of the top 100 revenue-generating AI companies using Stripe data reveals a striking acceleration in their path to profitability compared to traditional SaaS (Software as a Service) companies.


This new breed of AI-focused businesses is demonstrating unprecedented speed in revenue generation. The data shows that AI companies founded from 2020 onwards are reaching the $1 million revenue milestone in just 5 months on average, a significant improvement from the 14 months taken by AI companies founded before 2020. Both groups outpace traditional SaaS companies, which typically require 15 months to hit this mark.


Even more impressive is the velocity at which these AI companies are scaling to higher revenue brackets. The average AI company in this cohort reached $30 million in annualized revenue in a mere 20 months from their first sale. This is in stark contrast to equally promising SaaS companies, which took more than three times as long – 65 months – to achieve the same milestone.


The growth curve illustrated in the graph vividly demonstrates this disparity. AI companies show a steep, almost vertical trajectory in revenue growth, reaching the $30 million mark rapidly. In comparison, SaaS companies exhibit a more gradual, steady climb over a much longer period.

The legal industry, traditionally cautious and slow to adopt new technologies, is now experiencing a significant shift with the integration of GenAI into various aspects of legal practice.


Today, AI-powered tools are being deployed across a broader spectrum of legal work, including drafting, case management, discovery, and due diligence. This expansion of AI capabilities is driving major US law firms to invest in in-house AI expertise. Firms such as Latham & Watkins, Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, DLA Piper, and Reed Smith have begun hiring AI specialists, signaling a serious commitment to integrating these technologies into their practices.


The market is responding to this trend, as evidenced by the success of legaltech AI start-ups like Harvey, which recently secured a $100 million Series C funding round. This substantial investment underscores the growing confidence in AI's potential to revolutionize legal services.

The left graph depicts the percentage of venture-backed companies that are AI-focused in each category since 1990. Robotics leads the pack with an impressive 29.2% of companies in this sector being AI-focused. This high percentage underscores the role AI plays in advancing robotics technologies.


Enterprise software follows closely at 21.9%, indicating the strong integration of AI in business solutions. Surprisingly, space technology ranks third at 17.6%, suggesting a growing reliance on AI for space exploration and satellite technologies. Security comes in fourth at 15.6%, highlighting the increasing use of AI in cybersecurity and threat detection.


The right graph shows the 2023-24 deal volume by category, presenting a slightly different picture of current investment trends. Enterprise software dominates with 2,027 deals, more than double the next highest category. This suggests that while AI companies make up a significant portion of the robotics sector, the sheer volume of enterprise software deals makes it the most active area for AI investment. Health, fintech, and marketing follow as the next most actively funded categories, with 958, 535, and 496 deals respectively.


Interestingly, some categories like space and security, which rank high in terms of percentage of AI companies, don't appear as prominently in recent deal volumes. This could indicate that while these sectors have a high concentration of AI companies, they may not be attracting as much new investment as more mainstream categories like health and finance.


The data also reveals some surprising insights. For instance, despite the high profile of AI in areas like education and transportation, these sectors rank lower both in terms of percentage of AI companies and recent deal volumes. This might suggest untapped potential or unique challenges in applying AI to these fields.


The AI chip market has witnessed a remarkable investment trend over the past eight years, with a compelling comparison between industry giant NVIDIA and its startup challengers. Since 2016, approximately $6 billion has been invested in AI chip startups such as Cambricon, Graphcore, Cerebras, Groq, SambaNova, and Habana. While these investments have yielded a respectable 5x return, translating to a current value of $31 billion, the opportunity cost of not investing in NVIDIA becomes starkly apparent.


Had that same $6 billion been invested in NVIDIA stock at the time, it would have grown to an astonishing $120 billion today, representing a 20x return on investment.

This stark contrast underscores NVIDIA's dominance in the AI chip market and its ability to capitalize on the AI boom. This strategy has proven highly effective, with relatively modest capital investments yielding impressive returns. For instance, Character.ai turned $193 million in funding into a $2.5 billion exit, while Inflection parlayed $1.5 billion into a $650 million deal.

These transactions highlight the intense competition among tech behemoths to secure the best AI talent and technologies, potentially reshaping the landscape of AI innovation and corporate strategies in the coming years.

The AI industry has experienced remarkable growth over the past decade, with total valuations reaching nearly $9 trillion in 2024. This explosive expansion has been primarily driven by public companies, which now account for the majority of the market's value.

The graph illustrates a clear trend of accelerating growth, particularly from 2017 onwards. In 2014, the total value of AI companies stood at $283 billion, with public companies valued at $217 billion and private companies at $66 billion. By 2024, this figure has skyrocketed to $8.9 trillion, with public companies dominating at $6.7 trillion and private companies reaching $2.2 trillion.

A pivotal shift occurred around 2018-2019 when public AI companies began to significantly outpace their private counterparts in valuation growth. This trend has intensified in recent years, with public companies now commanding a substantially larger share of the total market value.

The rapid ascent of public AI companies suggests several key points:

1. Maturing market: The increasing dominance of public companies indicates that the AI sector is maturing, with more companies successfully transitioning from private to public status.

The landscape of large-scale NVIDIA A100 GPU clusters reveals interesting trends in the AI and high-performance computing (HPC) sectors. This data provides a snapshot of the current distribution and scale of A100 deployments across various organizations and use cases.


Meta (formerly Facebook) leads the pack with an impressive 21,400 A100 GPUs, highlighting the company's massive investment in AI infrastructure. It's closely followed by Tesla, boasting 16,000 units, which underscores the automotive giant's commitment to AI for autonomous driving and other advanced features.


Interestingly, we see a significant presence of national HPC facilities, with Leonardo (EU) deploying 13,824 A100 GPUs. This indicates a strong governmental push towards building AI and supercomputing capabilities at a national or regional level.


The distribution across public cloud, private cloud, and national HPC sectors shows the diverse applications of these powerful GPU clusters. Major cloud providers like Lambda and Microsoft's Azure (via DeepSeek) feature prominently, each with 10,000 A100 GPUs, demonstrating the growing demand for AI-focused cloud computing resources.


It's noteworthy that despite the introduction of newer GPU models like the H100 and Blackwell systems, the A100 clusters have maintained a steady presence. This suggests that many organizations are finding the A100's performance sufficient for their current needs, or are perhaps waiting for the right moment to upgrade their infrastructure.


The global distribution of these clusters, spanning the US, EU, UK, China, and other regions, illustrates the worldwide race for AI compute power.


Cerebras has emerged as a clear frontrunner, demonstrating remarkable growth with a 106% increase in research papers leveraging its wafer-scale systems. This surge suggests that Cerebras' unique approach to AI compute is gaining traction in the research community, potentially positioning them as a strong contender in the AI hardware market.


Groq, another notable player, has made its debut in the AI research sphere, with its Language Processing Unit (LPU) technology appearing in papers for the first time last year. This entry marks Groq's transition from development to practical application, signaling potential for future growth.


The graph also reveals interesting trajectories for other startups. Graphcore, despite showing steady growth, has been acquired by SoftBank in mid-2024, which could significantly alter its future direction and market position. Executive orders can be easily revoked by future administrations, and the Republican platform for the upcoming presidential election has already committed to reversing this regulation.

California's Senate Bill 1047 (SB 1047) emerged as the most ambitious and controversial state-level attempt at AI regulation. Sponsored by the Center for AI Safety, the bill initially proposed a stringent safety and liability framework for foundation models. However, the journey of SB 1047 from its original draft to its ultimate fate illustrates the intense debate surrounding AI regulation.

The bill faced significant opposition from tech companies, venture capitalists, and even prominent state Democrats, leading to substantial amendments that removed many of its controversial provisions. This pushback underscores the delicate balance between ensuring AI safety and fostering innovation.
